Basic setup

After installation is complete, you may want to set the machine’s default settings. Refer to the next section if you would like to set or change values. This chapter gives you step-by-step instructions for setting up the machine.

Altitude adjustment

The print quality is affected by atmospheric pressure, which is determined by the height of the machine above sea level.

Before you set the altitude value, determine the altitude where you are.

  4. Normal

  1. Press Menu on the control panel.

  2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight System Setup and press OK.

  3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight Altitude Adjustmet and press OK.

  4. Press the up/down arrow until the setting option you want appears.

  5. Press OK to save the selection.

  6. Press Stop/Clear to return to the ready mode.

Changing the display language

  1. Press Menu on the control panel.

  2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight System Setup and press OK.

  3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight Language and press OK.

  4. Press the up/down arrow to highlight the language you want.

  5. Press OK to save the selection.

  6. Press Stop/Clear to return to the ready mode.

Setting the date and time

  • If the machine’s power is cut off, you need to reset the correct time and date once the power has been restored.

  • Some menus may not appear in the display depending on options or models. If so, it is not applicable to your machine.

  1. Press Menu on the control panel.

  2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight System Setup and press OK.

  3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight Date & Time and press OK.

  4. Enter the correct time and date using up/down, left/right arrow or numeric keypad.

  5. Press OK to save the selection.

  6. Press Stop/Clear to return to the ready mode.

Changing the clock mode

You can set your machine to display the current time using either a 12-hour or 24-hour format.

Some menus may not appear in the display depending on options or models. If so, it is not applicable to your machine.

  1. Press Menu on the control panel.

  2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight System Setup and press OK.

  3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight Clock Mode and press OK.

  4. Press the up/down arrow until the setting option you want appears.

  5. Press OK to save the selection.

  6. Press Stop/Clear to return to the ready mode.

Quiet Mode

You can reduce the printing noise by turning on the Quiet Mode. However the printing speed may be slowed down.

  1. Press Menu on the control panel.

  2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight System Setup and press OK.

  3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight Quiet Mode and press OK.

  4. Press the up/down arrow until the setting option you want appears.

  5. Press OK to save the selection.

  6. Press Stop/Clear to return to the ready mode.

Entering characters using the number keypad

As you perform various tasks, you may need to enter names and numbers.

Entering alphanumeric characters

  1. When you are prompted to enter a letter, locate the button labeled with the character you want. Press the button until the correct letter appears on the display.

    For example, to enter the letter O, press 6, labeled with MNO.

    Each time you press 6, the display shows a different letter, M, N, O, m, n, o and finally 6.

  2. To enter additional letters, repeat step 1.

    If the next letter is printed on the same button, move the cursor by pressing the left/right arrow button and then press the button labeled with the letter you want. The cursor will move to the right and the next letter will appear on the display.

    You can enter a space by pressing 1 twice.

  3. When you have finished entering letters, press OK.

Correcting numbers or names

If you make a mistake while entering a number or name, press the left/right arrow button to delete the last digit or character.

Using the power saving mode

  1. Press Menu on the control panel.

  2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight System Setup and press OK.

  3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight Power Save and press OK.

  4. Press the up/down arrow to select the time you want.

  5. Press OK to save the selection.

  6. Press Stop/Clear to return to the ready mode.

Setting job time-out

When there is no input for a certain period of time, the machine cancels the current job. You can set the amount of time the machine will wait before canceling the job.

  1. Press Menu on the control panel.

  2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight System Setup and press OK.

  3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight Job Timeout and press OK.

  4. Enter the time using up/down arrow or numeric keypad.

  5. Press OK to save the selection.

  6. Press Stop/Clear to return to the ready mode.

Auto continue

This is the option to set the machine to continue printing or not, in case the paper size you have set and the paper in the tray mismatches.

  1. Press Menu on the control panel.

  2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight System Setup and press OK.

  3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight Auto Continue and press OK.

  4. Press the up/down arrow until the setting option you want appears.

    • On: Automatically prints after set time passes, when the paper size mismatches the tray paper size.

    • Off: Waits until you press Start on the control panel, when the paper size mismatches the tray paper size.

  5. Press OK to save the selection.

  6. Press Stop/Clear to return to ready mode.

Changing the font setting

Your machine has preset the font for your region or country.

If you want to change the font or set the font for special condition, such as the DOS environment, you can change the font setting as follows:

  1. Double-click the Smart Panel icon on the Windows task bar (or Notification Area in Linux). You can also click Smart Panel on the status bar in Mac OS X.

  2. Click Printer Setting.

  3. Click Emulation.

  4. Confirm if PCL is selected in Emulation Setting.

  5. Click Apply.

Following information shows the proper font list for corresponding languages.

  • Russian: CP866, ISO 8859/5 Latin Cyrillic

  • Hebrew: Hebrew 15Q, Hebrew-8, Hebrew-7 (Israel only)

  • Greek: ISO 8859/7 Latin Greek, PC-8 Latin/Greek

  • Arabic & Farsi: HP Arabic-8, Windows Arabic, Code Page 864, Farsi, ISO 8859/6 Latin Arabic

  • OCR: OCR-A, OCR-B
